Two things that I have to give this show are its ability to mix comedy with true horror. Buffy was originally supposed to have a horror element to it (which we all know quickly faded away midway through the second season in favor of more dramatic/action elements). Joss and the crew, as amazing as they are, never really wowed me in terms of creep factor. SPN continually drives home the darker and more disturbing aspects of the genre.

The witches' use of a toothbrush, Lilith's entrance covered in blood as she mentally torments her host's family, and let's not forget the final image of Dean chained in hell screaming for Sam. The physical jolt these scenes provided were well more effective than anything Buffy or Angel or Firefly ever offered.

And the brotherly comedy provided usually gets me laughing out loud much the same way Buffy was able.

Dean: (In reference to Lilith in a little girl's body) "Her face...is awful."

Dean: (in reference to being hit by a car) Did it look cool? Like in the movies?

Sam: You peed yourself.

Dean: Of course I peed myself. Man gets hit by a car, you think he has full control over his bladder? Come on!
