Willow didn't know she was gay until she met Tara - although "the Wish" episode certainly should have been a hint. Alyson played Willow as straight because Willow herself thought she was straight.

That said, there's another factor at play - the audience. Because there may be some distinction. Willow might not know she's gay but the author might want to allow viewers to be clued in or speculate.

That said, I think were I acting I'd want to know relevant things about my character so I could portray more accurately.
