The rules about twins are not as straightforward as they once were - but my bet is that the writers just screwed up; these guys have no science background and don't seem to know how to look even simple things up.

It is possible to have male and female identicals, sort of, if the embryonic split also produced one type of mosaicism. With a mitotic error in an XY embryo, you could get one twin to be XY and the other to be X0. If I was writing it, I'd really stretch the odds and make one XX and on XXY, adding an earlier nondisjunction to the process. Messy, but biologically more plausible to the rest of the premise.

And, since it has been found over the last decade or so that one fraternal can engulf and integrate another - a second form of mosaicism - it is conceivable that the absorption might stop with a conjoining, although I don't know of any recorded cases.
