I mentioned this book in my post of Jan 22. It's available in softcover, so I decided to buy it. There were a few points I thought people here might be interested in.

The book as a whole is a series of short chapters by various sociologists and ethnographers who study internet fandom. A lot of it is devoted to describing the Buffyverse fan base, particularly on posting sites and fanfic. In fact, the chapter on fanfic by Claudia Rebaza might be of some interest to fanfic writers here.

The most interesting chapter for me was that by David Kociemba. He analyzed The Trio as metaphors for addicted fans, tracing their path (mostly Andrew's) in terms of a modified 12 step recovery program. I thought he did an excellent job of using the show's own metaphors to comment on fandom. You can find mention of the paper in Slayage 21, available here (pdf -- search for "Kociemba").

I suggested in my original post that I'd be disappointed if AtPO weren't mentioned. It is, but only briefly. On p. 72 the main author claims she sent a solicitation for volunteers to participate in an online study to "AtPO" and 3 other sites which either didn't respond or refused to post the solicitation. The survey was mostly demographic, so I don't think it mattered much either way.
