I'm sure that plot-wise and character-wise they won't be able to rely on the show, but since the show is really what created the possible audience for the reboot (at least in terms of name recognition, even if die-hard Buffybuffs boycott it), I wouldn't expect that the tone would be much like the original movie. Certainly the writer claims she's drawn mostly by the series. So less bubble-headed Buffy, I bet. More dark angst.

I'm kind of hoping that what happens is that this Whit Anderson writes a brilliant script, but the production team just mangles it beyond recognition, and she gets a little frustrated but is able to finally realize her vision when, four or five years down the line, she becomes show-runner on this awesome new television series that blows all our minds.
