We were having a discussion about the movie last week on the baseball board where I post, and the general agreement was that even those who'd never seen the movie could enjoy it. 3-4 such fans chimed in that they liked it. So I think it can work, but obviously it works much better if you remember the series.

10th anniversary? There's a reunion? Go Pirates!
