I think if ASH had decided to leave abruptly after production had already started, he would never have been invited back for guest slots on Seasons 6 and 7. ASH was certainly appearing on British TV while Buffy Season 6 was airing (I think he did some theatre as well); that rather suggests that his UK agent had been told to start looking for UK work sometime during Season 5. Which, of course, was expected to be the last season; it was only because the show got picked up by another channel that we even had a Season 6 and 7.

The fact that ASH was working in the UK during the filming of Season 6 (even though Ripper fell through) would account for the rather sporadic guest appearances. They had to fit stuff round ASH's already contracted schedule.
