Giles had a line (in Beneath You, I believe) that although we may appear to have changed, we basically are the same people we always were. I may be overinterpreting of course, but it felt like a major ME statement to me. In my own life, I've seen friends after being apart for years, after they've married and become successful, or after they've gone downhill, whatever. They were still them, you know? Our relationships were still the same too. The same tensions, the same shared humor and so on. So Buffy and Faith still interacting roughly the way that always have doesn't seem untrue to me.

Now, maybe drama has its own imperatives and requires newness and moving forward, unlike life. That could be, but I think it is true more for stand-alone stories such as you get in movies. In serialized drama though, you pretty much have to circle back to old patterns. If the writers are good though, the newness comes by turning the situation a bit, examining things from a slightly different angle. Tony Soprano din't change much, but the complexity of the viewers response to him did.

To say that we're simply back to S3 and S4 Bad Girl Faith, that the writers aren't showing the history she'd been through doesn't fit with what I see. Yes, she's got the same insecurities. That hasn't changed and probably never will. Yes, we're revisiting S3's Faith, but as refracted through Gigi, so that Faith can see herself in her (the endless reflections of Faith and Gigi in the mirror in the bathroom are a nice visualization of that).

But Faith's got tools to help her cope now, so that she backs off from killing Buffy, tries to dissuade Gigi from going through with her plan, recognizes that she's been manipulated by older guys before. That's a continuation of the Faith of ATS S4 and Buffy S7. By the end of this arc, Faith will either have her mental state worsened by having to kill Gigi or watch her killed, or she'll have made a difference, somehow redeemed Gigi and maybe feel better about herself. Either way that's a movement of the character AND the story forward.
