Masq knows, but never bothered to change it. This was one of those rare occasions that ME waited so long to tell us the truth within the story, that it barely mattered by that time. Which is why people didn't always remember it.

It's what's in the story that's important. Telling us outside of the story does not count for much.

Personally, I think it's a better story, if he didn't know.
