You know, I get the feeling that this attitude that Buffy has no choice but to assume the duty of a vampire Slayer comes from the desire of many to have a "special someone" to take care of them, instead of learning how to take care of themselves.

To me, this is the downside of "hero worship" . . . including the worship of fictional "heroes and heroines".
