The other point of having Peter Parker design & make his own mechanical web shooters was to show how smart he was. Reinforce the whole "science nerd" aspect of his personality. I kinda liked that. Making the webs organic worked in the 1st movie (for me, anyway), as part of the whole process of discovering his powers & figuring out how to make them work & control them. But it bugs me when they retcon the comics to fit in w/the movies.
