I've had people say I look like Jack Nicholson, Rudolph Nureyev, James Dean, and Michael Jordan. Seriously. So who looks like who is in the eye of the beholder. I have seen the Body upwards of twenty times I'm sure and have never thought the teacher was supposed to have any connection to Joyce. Plus, the show doesn't do it that way. When they want you to notice a connection like that, they show it to you, for example the bleeding cut on Spikes face in School Hard CUT TO Buffy with red paint on her face in the exact same place. Or with words: Buffy calls Cordelia a moron in When She Was Bad and then calls herself a moron later, and it shows a connection between the conditions of the two characters. Or when Tara calls Giles a killer in the same episode that Buffy wonders if the slayer is just a killer and in which Giles commits murder while Buffy sacrifices herself for the world. The show typically makes such connections explicit, rather than hoping you think one character looks like another. I don't recall anything like that in the Body.

While I would personally agree with your friend on the second point as well, simply ascribing Buffy's use of the chest cutter to decapitate the vampire to her general resourcefulness, I would also say, if you feel it says something to you beyond that, then it does.
