When things look bad, for whatever reason, it's not unusual for people to blame their leaders. When people blame their leaders for a bad situation, it's not unusual for them to choose new leaders - even if the new leaders are untested, and not that different from the leaders they replace. As I said above, it's no accident that Kennedy is named after a politician.

Faith is blameless here; she doesn't even want the job, but she represents "change", and that's all the potentials care about. Spike is immune because he knows Buffy better than most of the other characters do, and knows some of the other characters better than they'd like. He understands that some of these people have their own agendsa.

I also think that Willow and Dawn deserve some credit. I think that, unlike the potentials, they recognize how tired and shaken Buffy is, and realize that she isn't really acting like herself. They aren't trying to overthrow Buffy - they're buying time for her to recover, as she's done before.
