Subject: need your (yes, YOUR) help

Hi, all,

Years ago, I was a regular on this board--and then I got a tenure-track teaching position, had two kids, and started getting up at five on weekends to get work done, and I've not visited much since then. (Yes, I miss it here.) Now, I'm back because I find I need the collective expertise of the people here.

Every couple of years, I teach a "J-Term" course on political themes in science fiction, examining books, short stories, and film. To that end, I'm looking for suggestions of a very specific kind: I need short stories in the political science, fantasy, or horror genres in which the fantastic elements are symbolic of political themes, events, issues, or ideas. We read and discuss these in class, so the ideal story is one that can be read by a non-avid reader in about 20-30 minutes. It makes little difference when it was published, but ideally, the politics remain relevant today. (The last time I taught the class, the stories I used included "Are You Listening?" by Harlan Ellison and "Foster, You're Dead!" by Philip K. Dick, if that gives any indication of what I'm looking for, though I really just used those--fine though they both are--because they were all I could find.)

I would appreciate any and all suggestions, as I plan to spend my Christmas break tracking down material for the class, which begins January 4. Please help! Thanks, and happy holidays.
