I think you've hit the key point. They didn't tell anyone that Buffy was dead, because then the demons would know that the Hellmouth was no longer protected by a Slayer. Therefore, they couldn't tell Hank - not that any of them actually liked Hank to begin with.

Sunnydale and the Hellmouth had not been protected by a Slayer or anyone else for nearly a century before Buffy's death. Exactly how was the latter going to change things that drastically?

Frankly, the Scoobies had no right to keep the news of Buffy's death from Hank.
