Since "Hush" was the one "Buffy" episode that was nominated for an Emmy award (I think it won), I hardly think it was a "debacle."

And "Buffy" doesn't really fit the "classic" horror genre. Joss purposely turned the "damsel in distress" into the "girl who kicks butt". Yes, there are elements of classic horror in BtVS, but the show really breaks that mold.
