I think (as I've posted elsewhere) that the homeschooling of Gigi was introduced as a possible explanation for her bizarre behavior and attitudes. It makes her a more sympathetic character - we don't know if she's truly insane, or just a victim of deeply stupid parenting. This makes the parallel between Gigi and Faith more obvious, and their connection more understandable.
