So it was pretty interesting to read your post - it looks like things are being reset to how they were when I was reading. Back then...

No one (except Norman Osborn (dead) and then Harry Osborn) knew Peter's identity.

Peter was still reeling from the death of Gwen Stacey and his relationship with MJ was very tentative.

To answer your question - I think the move by Marvel in the 1960s to long-term and large scale continuity (i.e. creating the 'Marvel Universe') was a bold and ambitious undertaking that produced a lot of good material. But (in my humble opinion) eventually large and elaborate back stories become unwieldy encumbrances and it is time to either make some changes or turn to something new.
