I agree with you on the "existentialists can be happy" idea. I too consider myself to be one. It's not that. But happiness and despair are two ends. Most of life is somewhere in the middle, which is where I feel Buffy is right now. She had tons of unhappiness which kind of casts a shadow of her one moment of happiness (at the end of the tv series). I don't think that she is at the other end of the spectrum yet.

Yes, of course the drama is derived from character unhappiness and I fully agree that I would like to see it affect someone else as opposed to just Buffy. However, unlike Firefly/Serenity, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is about Buffy - her troubles, her ordeals, her drama. I think by the 3rd or 4th season, the show had started to move to where Firefly started - an ensemble show - but it is still titled BTVS.

So...

What can be done? I don't know. She's not done baking yet, right? So clearly she still has some heat in front of her.

Just MHO.
