Hmmm... it's all very a proof that whatever you do people will always bring their own subtext to things and this woman who feels Joss sold out a favourite character of hers is obviously angry enough (which I can relate to although not go along with - as I didn't enjoy watching one favourite character die and another one turn abuser big time in "Seeing Red" muchy although I can understand the reasons why it was done) to read her own onto the Buffy/Angel verse.

You can say the men of Buffy/Angel verse didn't fare much better really - Xander needed up maimed, Jonathan (although not a major character was brutallly killed) and all of the male heroes of Angel's final season were looking like they were going down - (there are indications that had the Angelverse continued Gunn would have been turned into a vampire). Spike of course had died already at the end of the Buffyverse - heroical but painfully.

Whedon's main reputation is for loving and making us love his characters but brutally killing them if it will make for a better story or challenge us. Giving us what we need rather than what we want even if he knows the pain he will give and the resentment he will reap for some folks. In "Serenity" the two characters he ruthlessly dispatches are both male - and one (the emigmatic Book) was favourite of mine who I hoped to learn more about but that's the way Joss works and I accept this as he is a wonderful storyteller. At the end of the day in Joss I trust.
