Subject: Vengeance vs Reconciliation BSG spoilers for "Collaborators"

This episode is one that ranks with the best as it brings all the energy taken for vengeance, getting even with someone, anyone to make the suffering go away. War time makes for the worst of people to come forth and forget that life is more than the battle. Roslyn takes what Zarek has to say and brings it to the day she is again sworn in as President. Her first instinct had been to offer the people the trials that would have gone on forever and only perpetuated bad feelings while creating more of a break between the people in the fleet. This speech shows how quick she is to realize that no one has the moral high ground in a situation that they had survived and that the only way to survive is to move on while remembering where they went wrong.

"Thank you all for once again entrusting me with this high office of civil service.
Today is a new beginning for all of us. We share a unique destiny that our future is ours to shape and our past cannot be forgotten. A new day requires new thinking and while I had intended on using this occasion as an opportunity to announce a formation of a Special Prosecutor's office, charged with investigating acts of collaboration with the enemy. I have decided instead, that a different gesture is called for on this, the first day of my next term as your president.

We all feel the need for justice, and we all feel the need for vengeance. And telling the difference between the two can be difficult at times. We are all victims of the Cylons, and none of us can be impartial. I certainly can't. So, today I am forming a Commission on Truth and Reconciliation to hear our stories and record them for posterity. There will be NO prosecutions. I am issuing a General Pardon for every human being in this fleet. This will not be a popular move today. But I truly believe that this is the only way for us to move forward in strength. In a spirit of reconciliation. I thank you for your continued patience and courage. Good Day."

The flight from New Caprica came at a great cost to everyone. In laying down their burdens at last seasons end the people in the fleet of Battlestar Galactica got lost and ended up prisoners of the Cylons. The Cylons are the ones that they want to get even with but as Starbuck mentioned sometimes anyone will do. To continue on the journey they had to stop murdering each other. They had to stop pointing fingers in a process that would have kept them in a hostile limbo. Laura did the smart thing and started the process of healing that can only happen with the pass of time which allows for our rational mind to catch up with our need to get even. For this to work everyone had to be included in the Pardon and that new day had to start from the last words of Laura's speech. I'm sure the wounds created by the occupation of New Caprica will be long lived but vengeance never ends as long as it gets continued fuel.
