2007 has now started!

Ooookay, Combat. Combat, Combat, Combat.

Very male orientated episode this one (bet that comes as a surprise). Burn Gorman's Owen the ticking time bomb reaches the end of his notoriously short fuse and violence ensues. I liked it but I doubt if it has much cross-gender appeal, I could be wrong but my guess is that I'm not. Still not happy with the one-off nature of the program, it seems to prevent any depth or feeling of reality entering the pieces, maybe that's just because the setting is so much closer to home as opposed to the 'exotic' views I see in US imports.

Captain Jack Harkness

With the prominent and open gay writing and acting connections the show had this episode was always on the cards and I don't know whether I'm pleased with the way it was handled or disappointed that it was so obviously always going to be made (and is therefore, almost by definition, more than a tad self-indulgent). Without spoilers I can't really comment further but I think more could and should have been made of the historical backdrop. Given the time limitations the pacing of the program would have to have been altered to allow this and that would detract from the mood. It's not for me to criticise this one-off in any meaningful way but I wonder if a bit more exposition wouldn't have been appropriate.

End of days

Cracking series finale. The Bad Guy needed more background, more of a lead in, but the idea behind the climax was a new one AFAIK and had been set up, confirmed and re-confirmed over the series (so much so that it may have been in danger of being the single unique selling point of Torchwood) and I still, somewhat stupidly perhaps, didn't see it coming. The aftermath was a little staid, anti-climactic I suppose you could say, but the final end point leaves us wondering if anything will ever be the same again.
