Subject: The Mutant Genome Cure and Cultural Assimilation

Haven't seen anyone discuss Astonishing X-Men here, except to announce a new issue or something, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

One of Whedon's first story arcs involved a plot that the third X-Men movie cribbed from the JMan himself, a move that were he not the laid back fellow that he is would piss Whedon or anyone off given that they rejected his script doctoring for the first one in favor of trite material.

It involved a scientist having allegedly discovered the cure for the mutant genome. This revelation split the team apart temporarily, with some mutants wanting the opportunity to be "normal" and others appalled at the suggestion of eliminating something so fundamentally apart of their lives.

The X-Men has always had a 'discrimination against marginalized minority groups' theme at its center, and more universally the accessible idea of being different in any way and the scrutiny and hate it can inspire in other people. The story itself, for this reason, resonates for anyone who's felt marginalized, and raises questions pertinent to marginalized groups of ethnicities and sexual orientations.

Beyond the questions of whether or not, were one given the biological opportunity, a member of these groups would or should eliminate the defining factor in discrimination against them, on a base level it asks if we would, or should, be able to, through biological engineering, eliminate the things that can repel someone else from us, be it cultural affiliations or biological factors or 'flaws'.

If someone told you that you were socially inept, and then offered you the opportunity of rectifying this with technological advancement, would you?
