The DVD is digital, so it won't have deteriorated. It's possible that the source material was badly transferred, but I think the discs in the limited edition complete boxset were identical copies of the standard set discs. You should probably do a quick equipment and cable check - maybe play it on someone else's system for comparison. Are you sure you aren't just watching one of the early episodes filmed in 16mm?
