All I can say is that BtVS is a work of fiction, not a Discovery Channel documentary on vampire physiology. Sometimes the story requires that vampires are really tough, sometimes that Dawn is able to disposs of them. It is fun to try to rationalize the contradictions but in the final analysis, it is all in the service of the story.
