Subject: Biting as metaphorical sex
In reply to: skeeve 's message, "Re: venous fly?" on 08:02:39 12/29/05 Thu

I've heard that too, but why?
I think it is all a matter of personal interpretation and there is probably nothing I can say that will convince you that it was sexual (not that convincing you is all that important). Go back and look at the scene:
At first, the look on Buffy’s face is that of pain but as Angel feeds, her mouth drops open and her eyes close. She reaches out and grabs a metal pitcher and crushes it. She then pulls her knees up to straddle Angel and her arms go around him. At the climatic moment, her eyes flash open and she kicks out her legs. To me, that is a classic, and extremely hot, sex sequence.

Or it might be that you've heard of the bite/sex metaphor forever and couldn't help remembering.
That could well be. We are prisoners of previous experience (or as Darla would say “What we once were informs all that we have become”). However, I think throughout Angel, the link between sex and biting is reiterated over and over. A number of times, Darla and Drusilla indicate that they achieve sexual satisfaction through inflicting and receiving pain and the standard method of pain infliction for vampires is biting. I think even if I had never heard of the bite/sex metaphor previously I would have made the connection.
