I wonder if this implies that Yemi used to take Eko's confessions. Or maybe this is a standing joke btwn. them.

I highly doubt Eko has made any confessions to his brother and think that comment refers to the ongoing rejection of Eko by Yemi. Eko had fooled himself into thinking that under all the worst he has done a little bit of good has come out of it. You can see that when he came up with the drugs in the statue plan it became a fulfillment of Eko's own rejection of his past faith. I guess you can act out of despair and not realize it.

I may have missed 1 or 2 episodes. I don't remember ever seeing the black smoke before, at least not looking like it had a mind of its own. "Black smoke" references I've seen looked like it just came from a fire, possibly lit as a signal by the Others, up the mountain. Has it been shown before acting like a "creature"? Is this what Locke saw in Season 1?

We only saw the movement of the black smoke before 23rd Psalm. I'm thinking it just may be part of what the man in the film calls the 'incident'.

I'd say it was before he killed the Others, because right after the crash, as soon as he'd helped some other survivors to shore, he waded back in & started pulling bodies out of the water. I think the process had to have started already, or why would he have bothered w/people who were already dead? Ooh, maybe there's a parallel here: I almost wrote "people who couldn't be saved." Yemi had written Eko off as someone who couldn't be saved, couldn't be forgiven, even by God; in fact, that very statement may have been what made Yemi start...reconsidering. Was Eko dead inside? Did whatever happened after he was kept from boarding 1 plane & after he did board another make him feel that he could be saved after all? In any case, I'd say the process of his becoming a priest was completed when he put his brother's cross on (took up his brother's cross, in the sense of his burden or task?) & said, "Yes. I am." Although, especially given that, I was surprised that he apparently burned his brother's body along w/the plane rather than burying it. Wouldn't he have wanted to give Yemi as close to a Christian burial as he could?

I think when Eko was on that airstrip he was at least conflicted, but I have to wonder about how long ago that was? Wearing a suit of clothes is one thing, but that cross meant everything to Eko, it was who he was before it was taken off then flung away from him. His brother by wearing it kept that part of Eko alive. Taking it back and accepting the role of the priest is a form of speaking for those who no longer can. Eko may have started on his way on the airstrip but it's when he easily killed the 2 Others that he realized it was time to take up carving as a way to "remember" things he needed to. I guess I mean he started searching for his brother wearing a suit that meant little to him until he was able to touch his brother and find his faith again.

he was the one who picked up & kept the Bible they found.

Just something I remembered from the episode 'What Kate Did'....

EKO: At that time the temple where the people worshipped was in ruin. And so the people worshipped idols, false gods. And so the kingdom was in disarray. Josiah, since he was a good king, sent his secretary to the treasury and said: "We must rebuild the temple. Give all of the gold to the workers so that this will be done." But when the secretary returned, he had no gold. And when Josiah asked why this was the secretary replied, "We found a book." Do you know this story?

LOCKE: No, I'm afraid I don't.

EKO: What the secretary had found was an ancient book -- the Book of Law. You may know it as the Old Testament. And it was with that ancient book, not with the gold, that Josiah rebuilt the temple. On the other side of the island we found a place much like this, and in this place we found a book. [Eko unwraps the book and pushes it toward Locke] I believe what's inside there will be of great value to you.

I think Eko is saying there is more to faith than blind acceptance.

This Bible doesn't mean what you might have expected, & Eko's religion may turn out not to either. Has something been cut out of it too? And also replaced by something more "practical"? Has this already been covered in the story of how he became a warlord?

That's the thought that nags at me in regards to Eko, the man who acts without hesitation. I have to add in the thought that Locke is always saying 'who are we to tell anyone what or what not to do', I think there will be a conflict between the two men that isn't apparent yet.

Are you saying you didn't like "The Hunting Party" and it's repetition about crossing the line...;)? I haven't written anything about that episode yet as it's one that sets up something for later, plus Jack is not my favorite character.
