I happened to watch "Eternity" today, in which first the actress and then Angelus say variations on the line "They think I'm the part I play." For years now some fans have said "DB--what a terrible actor!" while those who worked with him seemed quite impressed with his work. Hello--Angel is a role--"broody," flat affect. Underplaying is acting. We'd never seen him do anything else, and few if any of us knew how different Angel might be from the real DB (who, one supposes, is also different from the often somewhat uneasy person we saw interviewed in the BtVS/AtS years). His performance in Valentine attempted to capitalize on his "Angel" role was bad--but the whole movie was terrible. But anyone who saw him in the little romantic comedy I'm with Lucy (2002) knew he had more talents than just brooding and sardonic.
