When has Buffy ever put romance ahead of duty? She always puts the job first.

When Buffy was THE Slayer, she always put the mission first. Now she is merely the senior Slayer among hundreds. She could better put her skill and experience to use in an administrative capacity with the assistance of Giles and Andrew. She does not need to always be on the front line (generals do not usually spend a lot of time in the trenches). At the end of Chosen when Dawn asks what they are going to do now, the question is no longer an empty one. In S3, before Faith turned evil, Buffy was actually considering relinquishing some of her responsibilities so she could have at least some semblance of a normal life. No reason why she can’t reconsider now that there is ample help. After seven plus years of constant battle, I think Buffy has earned a bit of a respite where she can consider her own needs and desires. She could in effect assume the position of Slayer Emeritus. If she wants to go to Rome to sow a few wild oats with the Immortal, then I say go for it.
