I kind of fan wanked the discrepancy between the strength of the first and subsequent Turok-Hans in that the first one was a champion, a kind of a Groosalugg of the uber-vamps. He was their big stud and the following dudes were more garden variety. However, even given that, in Buffy’s vision in Get It Done, there were thousands, maybe thousands of thousands of these critters. The slayers suffered casualties and based on the scene in the bus, quite a few of them did not make it out. How long they could have fought is not at all clear to me. The odds were really stacked against them. I will take your explanation and try to incorporate it into my view of the battle but I am afraid I still see the amulet being of more importance than you give it credit.
As far as the greater good argument, this is not a position that I believe is consistent with Buffy’s basic outlook on life. I do think she took on more of the attitude of a general in season 7 – we are going to lose people but it is necessary. Even then, she agonized over ever lose. She might have even come to agree that the good outweighs the bad but not without some real painful sole searching. That’s all I wanted – some acknowledgement that this decision was a trade off. For seven years, Joss and ME had emphasized the moral ambiguity of life in the Buffyverse. At the last minute, we are expected to just blow off the question of innocents dying because the slayer activation was a cool way to give Buffy her life back. Well I did buy it but it still troubled me.
