The certainty of the backlash is central to my (largely unsupported) interpretation of the nature of magic. How to control or direct this backlash is the point in question I think, if your ability is not equal to your understanding then the right approach may not lead to the right results in this regard.

Definitely an interesting and useful plot device whatever the truth of it from the writers POV.
