Well, for 1 thing, they wanted it to sound like her parents were the monsters & she hadn't run far enough away from them. But as it turned out, the monsters were really the facts that Pylea had been real & that she couldn't block out what she'd been through anymore once she faced her parents. To take it less literally, she couldn't run far enough away from the monsters of Pylea, even once she was back in her home dimension, to keep from eventually having to admit they were real & deal w/that. Or at least, if she wanted not to face that, she hadn't run far enough.
