The choice between becoming a Christian 'martyr' to a greater or lesser extent and preventing others from suffering that fate, which is a Christian act achieved by un-Christian means. You must decide who you are, or who you are willing to be, in the knowledge that whatever decision you make there will be people who will object to your decision and/or will exploit it to their benefit.

You can only be sure of being true to yourself but, in consolation, if Shakespeare is to be believed in Hamlet I.3 78-81 Polonius says to his son Laertes:-

This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
