A fine post, by the way. I think probably the biggest indication that the addiction metaphor came up a little sudden is the necessary dropping of it in Season 7. I mean, they tried to pretend that Willow was recovering, but that's where it breaks down rather than where it works. Recovering drug addicts aren't trying to get to the point where they can take drugs in a safe and responsible way.

As for Willow's absolution, I look at it as though willow succeeded where Xander in Hells Bells failed. You put yourself in the situation you're afeared of and you handle it differently than you fear. Willow does that in Chosen, and that's where the grace comes from. So yes its from Buffy, but it is also Willow's personal responsibility. Contrast to Xander who fears he'll be like his dad and therefore runs, as opposed to putting himself in the same situation and choosing to be different.

So I think there's an intimation of personal responsibility on Willow's part as she faces that fear and handles it.

Not sure I can offer anything for Amends.
