Being a committed atheist, I have never really had an interest in the history of religion but I can certainly see the parallels in seasons 1,4,5,7and maybe 6 but I don’t see any connection in season 2 or 3. I know you said that the connection is weakest in the early seasons but I fail to see it at all in those two seasons. Granted, both The Judge and Acathla were ancient beasts but they were the instrument of the big bad, not the big bad themselves. You said the first couple of seasons employed the “EARLY STAGE: Demons and their ilk. The Age of Nature Spirits.” metaphor and certainly the Master falls squarely within that definition. I think Spike, Dru, and Angelus do not. You never claimed the Mayor as part of any religious metaphor nor does he appear to be; he seems distinctly secular to me (say secular inhumanist).
