Thanks for the explainy. I just assumed there was some secret reason (maybe a comic book reference or some such) that I was umaware of for referring to a non-scythian implement as a scythe. I guess that is better than calling it a Bardiche-Guisarme which is undoubtably correct but rather esoteric but why not just call it an axe?
As far as the analogy to a machine gun, while one might refer to the action of the gun as "mowing men down like a scythe", I don't believe anyone would ever refer to the machine gun itself as a scythe.
