I just never got the impression before ITW that he felt that strongly about Anya
Nor did Buffy as during the conversation she brought up Anya and said: “Is she more than a convenience. Cause that would kind of be a surprise”. I think his statement to Anya was supposed to be that grand statement of love and as I said before, motivated by Buffy and Riley’s problem with communication. I think the first indication that Xander really had serious feelings for Anya occurred in The Replacement. In a scene in the new apartment the following conversation takes place:

Anya: You really got the apartment?
Xander: I really did. And do you know why?
Anya: The ceiling fans? They are very attractive.
Xander: No. It’s because I knew you wanted it. It’s all for you.

Of course, this was the suave, mature Xander speaking but the text indicated that both Xanders were Xander and this statement represented his true feelings. Of course, nobody but Xander, Anya and the viewers witnessed this scene, hence Buffy’s attitude toward Xander and Anya in ITW.

It's just that in substance he didn't because of what preceeded them.
What can I say? Even when he is good he is bad. As I said, as the scene developed I thought “Oh no, another Xander tirade”. At the end, from my perspective, he saved it. Maybe not though.

I did just notice that the scene title on my DVD for the conversation in question in ITW was “Friendly Advice”. Hardly conclusive proof that Xander was trying to do good as I have never tried to correlate scene titles with on screen action to see if they are truthful but it is suggestive. Xander’s behavior makes it difficult to defend him as even when he has good intentions, he is overly aggressive, usually lacks sensitivity, and has an incredibly bad sense of timing. I certainly understand your position – it is a valid interpretation; I hope you understand mine.
