Buffy's behaviour constantly pushes Riley away in a situation when he obviously already feels alienated.

I agree about the mystification. One of the great marvels of the show I guess. Statements like yours above make me wonder if I was watching the Thursday night Buffy instead of the one on Tuesdays.

I would phrase it "Buffy is constantly the perfect dream partner to Riley in a situation where he can't conceal his dickness."

A subtle difference to be sure, but its there and it is mystifying.

In answer to your other question, it would be more comparable to getting felt up while under the influence of the rape drug. Buffy didn't "let herself get bit." Riley went out and paid for it. Buffy got bit in the context of a confrontation with Dracula, initiated by Dracula and ultimately ended by Buffy. Riley paid for getting sucked in the context of sneaking out of Buffy's bedroom in the middle of the night when she was thinking she was with her boyfriend after a withering month or so of worry over her mom and other things, and he had no intention of stopping until he got caught. Dracula put some hypno spell on Buffy. He also did it to Xander and to Giles. Riley knows this. He saw it. The spell the vamp whores put on Riley was not significantly different than the spell any whore puts on any man: Give me money and I'll do that thing you want.

Putting Riley's transgression in a sexual context should not automatically end the relationship. Although its reasonably clear that Riley was doing it for that reason. But Riley's snockering of Faith could be put in a sexual context and Buffy was able to let that go. Ok, so she looked like Buffy. But I bet Buffy doesn't feel that way. I bet she feels like Riley slept with her arch enemy.

Also, I'm not sure that the vamp sucking doesn't have a sexual component. How often do those of us that are involved with a partner, let someone else of our particular persuasion suck on parts of our body in the middle of the night when we're supposedly in bed with our partner? Even if its the arm. Plus bodily fluids is a wierd sexual area. People are into some wierd things and I'm not prepared to say that blood couldn't enter into it. But at any rate, it was intimate contact. There's a reason Marcellus Wallace threw that Samoan out the window.
