Subject: 48 days later, she made a mistake....spoilers for Lost 2.7

This was the extended episode that gave us a short course on survival from the tail end perspective. From word one it was tough with no doctor at that end of the plane. We see the tail section crash into the ocean and Ana rise to the surface and immediately set to saving others along with Mr. Eko. Mr. Eko starts out in a business suit and is quite chatty. Ana seems to have aggression permanently beaming from her face. But Ana saves a little girl by CPR and when she asks about her mother in LA

Ana: We're not there yet..I promise we'll get you there soon.

Mr. Eko is the one who collects the dead for burial...it's something he has to do, while Libby the clinical psychologist sets a passengers leg (he dies later).

A man runs from the direction of the jungle and yells about "somebody in the jungle, he's alive" and that's how we meet a terrified Bernard who is up a tree with another dead passenger. It's Ana who calms him down enough to reach out for the branch that saves him from falling. Ana speaks with the man who alerted her to Bernard and he is Goodwin and apparently from the "Peace Corps"

Later in the evening we hear a struggle and Mr. Eko is found over a dead man with a rock in his hand, he's killed someone and it wasn't a passenger. There's no wallet, cell phone, keys, nothing? By day 2 we have 3 people missing. Ana says that whoever that was who Eko killed, "these people were here before us".

We find out that the plane had lost communication and was headed back to Australia and had been going for 2 hours in the wrong direction.

By day 5 they've buried "Donald" (the broken leg guy) and we see the other graves. At one point they find and kill a chicken (how did that get on the island?) and Eko is no longer speaking. Libby says he hasn't spoken in a week and tries to reassure him that he was just defending himself by killing the other.

Day 12 they are making weapons to hunt/defend themselves. Mr. Eko is taking special care in carving the stick he carries. Ana tells off the passenger Nathan for going to the washroom without another person present. That evening, the children are taken by 2 of the others. Ana kills an other and finds, a list. The list names each passenger, what they are wearing, what they look like...the group is being infiltrated, but why? Now it's time for paranoia to set in. Ana insists that everyone starts walking away from where they were, into the jungle.

Day 17, Libby mentions that Nathan creeps her out and Ana says why do you think I'm digging this hole. Day 19 Ana kicks Nathan and shoves him into the hole and starts the questions about where the children are. She doesn't remember Nathan on the plane and he doesn't remember her. When asked where he's from he says Canada, he stayed one extra day.

Day 23 Ana is still questioning Nathan...where are the children? She notices that Nathan has been fed and turns to Mr. Eko and we know it's just his way. Goodwin tells Ana he worries about her...4 days of Nathan down there..."we're not savages". When the others sleep Goodwin lets Nathan out of the hole and tells him to go, Nathan asks where the beach is and Goodwin attacks and breaks his neck.

Day 24 Ana wakes to Goodwin watching her very closely.

Day 27 a bunker is found with the word "Quarantine" on the inside of the door. It seems to be a storage facility. There is a quick shot of the Dharma logo. They find some personal items...a glass eye, bible, radio. Goodwin insists that to get good reception by going to higher ground, that after we hear Bernard getting a response from another survivor...Ana dismisses it as being 'them'. Ana leaves with Goodwin for higher ground and some questions.

Ana wants to know why they are attacked, why some are taken and not the others. Goodwin asks for the knife Ana has and she mentions the fact that the Army logo on it has to be about 20 years old. She then tells Goodwin that she saw him come from the jungle, and he wasn't wet, he can't have been on the plane. Asks him where his friends are. Goodwin says that Nathan wasn't a good person and that's why he wasn't on the list. He tells Ana the children are fine then they fight to the death. Goodwin dies and Ana goes back to the camp and tells the passengers they are safe now. Bernard wonders if there are other survivors and Ana showing her state of mind tells him "This is our life now-get used to it"

We see Ana cry at a stream and Eko comes up to her and says it's going to be okay, she is surprised he is speaking after 40 days. Eko says "You waited 40 days to cry"

Things speed up at day 45 when they find Jin on the shore and try to get him to speak. He thinks they are the others and manages to free himself and run yelling for Michael and Sawyer. We then go through the next while reliving how the tail section saw the capture of Michael, Jin, and Sawyer. Ana asks Eko to hit her so she can find out about the strangers. We flash through the journey back to the people from the front section up to Day 48 (sub-titled today). Things go very fast. Ana and her people can hear the whispering and then Libby calls for Cindy, they can't find her. There is a noise and Ana shoots...we then see Shannon, then Sayid crying over her body. Ana's face...that wasn't an other...she's made a mistake.

I took notes during the show and I'm sure I've left out a bunch of stuff but it's clear, Ana made a mistake. She didn't intend to kill an innocent person. After 47 days of losing fellow passengers. Losing the children. Ana no longer trusted anything, she shot out of fear. She shot because she knew what the Others were capable of even if not why. So, how do we judge Ana? For 48 days Ana and her fellow passengers have lost so many, have been deceived by an other who was very convincing. If we put up her life next to some of the characters like Sawyer, Kate, Sayid, how can we say one is better than the other?
