Frederick, more confused than ever looked at Kayariel. What in the world was she talking about? And of no occord, the woman just blinked out of being. Like she was never there. As if she were a figment of his imagination. What the hell? Frederick sighed and shook his head. This was beginning to get stranger and stranger. All he had come here to do was really be a royal errand boy. And this had happened. His shoulder twanged for a moment with pain, and he grimaced. Of all the rotten luck.. Well, he'd just have to grin and bear it, now wouldn't he? Fred frowned. It was time to get on with it.
Frederick led them on down the streets, pausing to speak only with Blaise, and ask him if he'd noticed anything unusual in the battle. Blaise, who did not seem to particularly care for him, glared. Frederick once again sighed, and took up the lead. The massive figure of the palace grew in the distance. The massive white granite spires of the palace's towers loomed in the distance. Already Frederick could see its massive wooden gates, studded in large, glistening metal studs, which lent support to the massive creaking gates. The sunlight reflecting off the palace was almost blinding. Several banners bearing the king's colors flew from the crenellations running across the walls. Archers stood stationed in the towers, while rather ceremonious looking pikemen wielded none too deadly looking weapons paced the walls. At least a company of guardsman stood at the gates to the Castle. Behind the outer wall rose the massive interior holdings, the halls of the King. It glimmered with a fire like gold, the stained glass windows of its cathedral like structure reflected the light into many different colors. It was an awe-inspiring sight. Frederick motioned for everyone to stay where they were, while he galloped up. A pair of pikemen stepped forth, and crossed weapons rather ceremoniously, and a third, obviously their commander, spoke loudly, "Stop and be recognized! Who are you, and who is your company? State your buisness here, immediately!"
Frederick, annoyed with the show, shook his head, but replied calmly. "I am Baron Frederick von Braun the third. My company are my guests. I come with an errand for the king. The Lord and Lady Cafall ride with me."
The captain motioned to the two pikemen, who uncrossed their long weapons. "Very well Sir. You and your company may pass. Gates!"
A smaller gate opened from the side of the much larger one, obviously meant for smaller groups of travel. Inside, the small group who had been about the carriage. He still did not know the name of the geomancer.. And that were-horse was about somewhere.. If it were still following him. A scholarly looking gentleman met them at the gates, flanked by a pair of quartermasters. In a quiet, dignified manner, he spoke to them, "Hello. I am Sir Svenson. I oversee the happenings of this palace for our good King. You are expected, Baron von Braun. Quarters will be made for your guests. You will see the king personally, my lord. Please, do bring what that which is required of you."
Frederick nodded, and one of the quartermasters came to his horse. Frederick reached into his saddlebag, and withdrew the package he had brought so far. What was in it, he did not know, but his father had stressed the importance of its safekeeping, until it was brought forth to the king. And here he was, ready to present it, and soon, he could return home...
