Jerome and Sebastian were significantly sick of traveling...especially in the overcast weather that had followed them for the past few days.
“Well, at least we’ll be in Rhonde by tomorrow,” Sebastian offered, undaunted by the weather. Jerome eyed Sebastian skeptically, as if to say, ‘How the heck can be in such a good mood?’ Instead, he just shook disgustedly his head and refrained from comment. “And once we’re at the palace we can finally wash all the mud out of our coats and clean the dirt of travel from our hooves for awhile.” Sebastian continued encouragingly.
“Hey! You two coming or what?” Jed, one of the human traders, yelled from the front of the line.
“Com’on Seb, we’re falling behind,” Jerome said miserably as he picked up a lazy trot.
“Honesty,” Sebastian said glaring at Jerome as he kept up, “Snap out of it! It’s not like you aren’t used to the rain and you’re being a damned nuisance with your attitude.”
“What attitude?!” Jerome yelled, scandalized. “I haven’t said a thing!”
“You don’t have to, you stupid piece of fewment. Just looking at your expression is enough to depress anyone.” Sebastian replied crossly, stepping over a puddle.
“Who asked you anyway?” Jerome glared back.
“I decided to take the liberty of informing your royal highness without your divine request.” Sebastian bowed sarcastically. “Com’on Jerome,” he continued, lightening up, “Just think of all the lovely ladies in court. I’m sure there are plenty of pretty ones there that you could—”
“Bastian,” Jerome cut his friend off, “I am perfectly content to think of a hot bath for now. Please, you needn’t elaborate on….the, er, possibility of…the, uh, attentions….well, um, the possibility of female companionship.” Jerome tried not to seem too discomfited by his friend’s bluntness and failed horribly. “Besides, I’m a centaur stupid. How many centaurs do you think are at court?”
Jerome grinned in a “you didn’t think of that, did you?” sort of way as Sebastian threw his arm around him and sighed dramatically. “I guess that is a problem for you, isn’t it? How dreadful. But never fear, I’m sure we’ll find something to do about it.”
“You’re terrible.” Jerome grinned, “Let’s just stick to business while at the palace, shall we?”
“That depends on your definition of business dear Jerome.”
“I said it before and I’ll say it again; you’re terrible.”
The two grinned at each other and companionably took up their position at the end of the convoy headed for Rhonde.
