Athiotriphantus... Doesn't it sound like a disease? well, it is, it is a virus. A very old virus, old and very very peculiar. Although it has never killed anyone, it has in some cases had people begging for death, and in others it invoked extrordinary powers. Some of those infected developed the ability to fly, others turned into hideously welted creatures perpetually in agonizing pain and unable to die for they had become immortal so long as the disease infected them. This last statement brings up the question of a cure, well there is one, but unfortunately it has never been found. The disease probably older than the world will not effect certain creatures, first off no elf can ever become infected, and seemingly blond headed gnomes with purple hair have never been infected, and it is rumored that a certain species of flying aquatic termites is unaffected by the disease. This disease can lay dormant for many years inside of its host or it may become violently active.

As for appearence well, its a virus, it consists of genetic material encased in a protein capsid.

Again i cannot stress enough how unpredictable this disease is. It is rumored that the virus is actually capable of thinking and reasoning. It's not all bad, after all it can be very helpful.
