In a tight circle in cloud level above the mare. His black feather-and-furred body creates little wind-drag at the current altitude that he is at. His adjusts his red-tainted wings as the wind current shifts slightlt, balancing out his gryphonish body.
Bloody Massacre was a gryphon in appearance, but he was too aggressive and too muscular to be just a gryphon. He had been engineered to be a killer, and in turn killed his creators. And he was a big bird/lion that needed to hunt and eat.
He tucked his wings to his side and dove, beak open slightly and fore-talons outstretched to grasp the mare. Before striking, he bellowed his wings and with a air-cracking snap, pulled himself out of the dive in a slash. His momentum would carry him and the mare he attempted to slash a good distance. In that distance he would be powerless, but only for the few seconds it took him to regain his control and take him further aloft, with or without his prey.
