- A Toast to Rafi and all HESers that know of the Spirit of Lake Stahahe -- Jay Mandelblatt, 21:45:52 03/03/07 Sat (cpe-76-183-97-18.tx.res.rr.com/76.183.97.18)
I have been to this site many times and while I like to see who is writing in I have rarely felt compelled to write anything or contact anyone. I had thought about contacting Nancy, as well as the Scott(s) that have written (Slavens, Debiase, and Glassberg). Rafi was on that list too. You just think people will always be there.
The same thing happened to me right before Dave Tabb died. My father had a friend who knew Dave. I was told Dave was starting a new career and he was trying to contact me. I didn’t feel the sense of urgency and then he was gone.
Now Rafi is gone. So as I raise a drink to toast Rafi, I figured I might as well put my name out there for those that want to say hello.
Here are two Rafi memories. It was the summer of 1975, some of us really pissed Tabb off right before we were going on our CIT trip. Dave basically banished us from camp for 1 night without food while he decided whether we would go on the trip (Maybe Nancy remembers what we did). Rafi, Larry, and Mitch drove out of camp sneaking us food (more for Nancy, Debbie, and Barri, than Saul, Steve, Monroe and myself). Unfortunately, they went off somewhere and ended up in a wreck with them getting hurt pretty bad. The second is the summer Rafi walked around with the album cover of Tea for the Tillerman telling everyone how much he looked like Cat Stevens.
I spent 10 years at camp, and as others have said, if you weren’t there you don’t understand. I tell people how I spent my summers away from home and they find it hard to believe. There wasn’t much to that camp, but I wanted to go every summer.
Being there was like having a huge family. It wasn’t like going to school or playing ball with some people. You lived with them, ate with them, fought with them, and protected them. While everyone didn’t get along, that’s what happens with families. People you may have ignored, or been ignored by in the city. Who you spoke to and dealt with mattered in our teen years, but that seemed to evaporate in camp, age didn’t matter because we were in it together.
A few didn’t make it out of the seventies (Barry Klein, Bruce Grama, and Joey Vitucci). I am sure there were others. Who knows who has passed since then?
While I can list many references that those reading this can laugh about and relate to, instead, as best my memory serves (I see many faces that I can’t put names to as I sit in front of the computer) I say hello to the many people that shared the summers with me at Camp HES in the seventies (’70 to ’79), and I raise a glass and have a drink to all of you.
Scott and Nancy Slavens (I guess Terry is a Slavens too), Saul and Neil Curtis (who I still talk to), The Debiase’s (Scott, Cami, David, and I know there were 2 others), the Roches’ (Linda, Edith, Iris, and Stella), The Gramas (Marc, Jason, and Tracy), The Marcus’s (Larry, Gary, and Joy), Philip and Gwen Klein, Scott and Todd Glassberg, Adam and Peter Shatesky, David and Marc Grossman, Kelly Bogart, Terry Umanoff, Monique Boyer, Wendy and Glenn Evans, Bob Stein (who I recently reconnected with, and I really want to call Bobby or Harpo), Jo and Neal Feinberg, Terry Resnick, Stephanie Resnick, The Steve’s (Weinberg and Eichner, now they wouldn’t remember me), Todd and Barri Langer, Neal Birnbaum (Slick), Mitch Levanthal, Mark Halpern, Starr and Denise Lederman, Lisa, Debbie R, Ilene Block, Pearl Grabosky, Debbie Weiss, Jodi Gold, Beth, Gary Cioffi, Donna Franco, Gary Gorelick, Adam Falek, Randi Mandell, Bobby Stillerman, Mark and Robert Iaria (may have been another one), Louie Kirsch (had a sister can’t remember her name), the Freidlander’s, the Schwartz’s, Denise Perlman, Gary and “Satch” Stein, Howie Dym, Sol, Steve Marks, Robyn and Adam S., Hutch, Barbara, and of course Stephen, Amy and Bonnie Tabb.

- My Memories -- Dan, 18:58:37 11/06/08 Thu (cpe-72-229-119-226.nyc.res.rr.com/72.229.119.226)
I attended HES during the early 1980's. To be quite honest, I wasn't a happy camper there, but this is what I can remember.
1. I remember our color war songs were based on The Eye of the Tiger and Don't You Want Me (Human League).
2. I remember hiking through the woods with our counselor and arriving at a Grand Union supermarket.
3. I remember an archery course.
4. I remember watching Raiders of the Lost Ark during a rain storm. The camp often showed us movies during rainstorms.
5. I remember eating in the mess hall (or whatever it was called) and often hearing the song Talking Baseball by Terry Cashman. I also remember the many mornings the camp served us blueberry blintzes which to this day I cannot look at without getting sick.
6. I remember a kid named Shlomo (I hope I'm spelling that correctly) who, unfortunately, was often made fun of because he would cry so much.
7. I remember the bunk inspections and some counselor walking around with a whistle. I had thought the bunk inspections to be quite unfair because our entire bunk was held responsible even if only one child didn't make his bed properly. Not to mention, we were only children.
8. I remember these 2 counselors, Scott and his brother. They were really big and muscular. I was nerdy so they definately didn't like me too much, but the feeling was mutual (at the time).
9. I remember what felt like a long trek to the swimming pool.
10. I remember mail call.
Does anyone else have any similar memories? I would love to see some photos as well.

I am looking to hear from people who went to the day camp in wyandanch, I went there from 1969 to 1984. I had a great time walking up the mountain. Have carnival day and putting on the play every year. I was very close friends with Googie, who passes away a few years ago. I remember the sleep overs and the long bus rides. I also remember when we moved to Staten Island. It was a fun time. I last heard that the day camp no longer exists. Hope that is not true. Loved to hear from people.

- Went to HES in the 70's -- Jodi (Yocheved) Rubin, 10:05:17 01/09/08 Wed (dsl027-141-240.nyc1.dsl.speakeasy.net/216.27.141.240)
H.E.S. was amazing, those were the best years of my youth. Looking for Amy Ehrlich, Risa Spieler, Jackie, Felicia Stohler, Helene Black, Scott & Todd Glassberg, Sharon Shrem, Rory Guiness, Leslie Lichtman & Debbie Rebhun of course. Wondering if Debbie or her mom still live on Eat 19 Street. Too many memories to list but here are a few.
Sneaking up the Hill.
Sneaking out at night by way of hiking or Jay Mandelblatt's or was it Scott Slaven's vehicle (could have been the camp vehicle & winding up at the Red Apple Rest (Bagel's with cream cheese and Bacon. (Can't believe I ever ate that)I am now kosher :-).
Bug Juice.
Adam Shatesky my first crush ever.
Big Monroe, the last guy I went out with from H.E.S.
Pulling out the legs on the daddy long legs and putting them in campers beds, we were bad)
Eggs we snatched from the kitchen and put in campers shirts while they were sleeping
Hanging out in Debbie Rebhun's room especially before we became CIT's, she was our counselor. Her room was in between ours and another bunk. She use to try so hard to be strict with us but were her favorites, her friends. I remember when she was actually pissed at us and would not let us be included in something we really wanted to do in addition to giving us a crazy curfew and enforcing it, we really hurt her by betraying her trust. How funny I remember this but I do not remember why, maybe it is because we hung Sharon Shrems bed from the ceiling beams or it could have been because we removed the springs from the top bunk of either Sharon or Helene Blacks bed. We thought she would be cool with it and she was not.
Hanging out in Rory Guiness & Leslie Lichtrman's room
Hanging out in Scott Glassburg's room when he was near black top/nurses room I believe)
Amy, Risa and Jackie were always in the guys rooms.
Drawing on faces while they were sleeping.
Wonder how Felicia is, she just popped into my head. Weird.
Color war
Meatloaf
disco nights - the dancing
the rocky horror picture show we put on one year as our play, of course it was Amy's idea.
Even remember the Grease show another year
One certain rock going down towards the water,I would remember it if I saw it (we use to smoke the chubanga there)
Getting Adam Shatesky to unlock the kitchen & getting ice cream at night.
Putting Vaseline on all the hardware in the guys bathroom.
I totally remember the time we were to pack up and leave and it was really colorwar
The huge turtles in the lake.
the trail to sebago beach.
bell bottom jeans.
orange county fair
baskeball games at night against other camps
square dancing in Bear Mountains
Debbie Rebhun
Todd Rudgren
Bruce Springsteen
canteen
waking up early in the morning for breakfast (freezing) by the time breakfast was over it was beautiful out.
cinnamon toast was awesome
singing the prayer after we ate, who would have ever thought I would become observant, now I recite that prayer after every meal I eat with bread. (I don't sing it the way we did but I still remember it.
Nice going back in time, if anyone can add more to it please do. hope to hear from someone who connects me to Debbie Rebhun, Amy, Risa or Jackie. My parents were friends with Amy's parents forever but we lost track, the last time I heard from her mom she lived in Virginia somewhere and is married, her parents moved from Staten Island, maybe someone keeps in touch with her. Jackie & Risa also lived in staten Island.
Hope everyone was lucky enough to have as many memorable years at H.E.S. sleep away camp as we did. Here's to all of you.

As the reunion date approaches and reading Jay Mandleblatt's summary of his H.E.S. experiences on one of the web pages, I wanted to offer up some of my memories. My hope is that I will pass along what I remember and those who read this will offer up their memory tidbits and that will spark some memories I have forgotten to come flooding back.
I can remember that first bus ride up to camp wondering if I was going to have a good time. Everyone talking to each other and getting excited about the summer camp experience. I could only hope I would like my first summer in sleep away camp. I think I almost plotzed when the camp was in view..... You have to admit the camp was not beauiful to say the least. I mean we had " Latrines" and bunks with no windows just screens and where was the pool ? But at the end of the summer Camp HES was the most amazing place in the world. You knew that you could hardly wait for the next summer to start.
This is what I remember ....................
I remember the first time I had to use the latrine , I was mortified but after many years and thousands of trips you get use to it. Who could forget those days when the latrines were to be cleaned............. need I say more ....
Going on raids to the boys bunk and having to use the Latrine as our mid-way point for raids. Always on the Dave Tabb /counselor alert as we made our way up all those stairs. I think planning the raids were more exciting than the actual raid
itself.
Wake up call in the morning - Was that music loud or what ? Who wanted to get up that early ? I thought camp was suppose to be a vacation.
What a visual remembering all the boys coming down the hill for breakfast in their underwear to protest not having enough time to get ready for breakfast as they were the last ones to get a walk up call.
Always having Peanut butter on the tables for those who did not like the food that was served. Who knew anything back then about Peanut Allegies ? I do remember loving the potato blinzes - what food does everyone else remember being served ?
Bug Juice was the best !!!!
Dave Tabb and his bunny slippers always yelling at the CIT'S
Baby sitting for Amy and Steve as part of your job as an Aide - But you did get to watch TV and everyone did come by to visit you.
Having to hug a tree in the rain one night due to bad behavior
Learning how to french kiss was a big part of my education and I want to thank you Robert Chenrick.
Watching the Kitchen and Maintence staff play Basketball with other camps.
israeli dancing on backtop
Friday Hikes -
I remember one trip where we all had to climb over a big tree and on the other side was a huge boa constrictor was taking a snoze. We could not stop talking about it the whole hike..... Brooklyn girls see nature.....
I remember on some Friday hikes we use to walk to a man made lake - not sure of the name
My fondest memory of our hikes was always picking blueberries
As CIT'S I remember ditching the kids we were watching and hitching back to the camp only to hang out in the Maintenance Tent with the maintenance boys....
Dedications at the table - you got the whole camp gossip when dedications were made
fritz the handy man -
Mitch the puppet guy - Was he a counselor ? Did we learn anything from him?
Reading True confession magazines during services.
I remember Barry Klein and I yelling " Louie " but not sure why Maybe because we liked Louie's name ?
Music I remember : rock the boat -
cat Stevens greatest hits -
Fleetwood Mac
Israeli dancing on blacktop
badminton on Blacktop
Mail call - canteen -
Natural Museum - After seeing the nature people put a mouse in the snakes cage , I vowed never to go back to the Nature Hut again.
Sandra " Are they there " - Making sure my boobs were there?
" You don't call me ferocious for nothing ....."
Our " Grease" production headed by Scott Slavens
CIT Trip to Niagara falls and Ontario - Witchi Poo - Free calls home at the "Y"
Jonathon - yelling at the top of his lungs " Do you love me " to the head of Maintence.
Color war - when they told us they had to close the camp and all the girls started crying as none of us wanted to go home. Then we were so mad when we learned we were fooled.
Raids in the kitchen with the kitchen boys. What could we have possibly been looking to eat ?
Ilene painting the best Color War posters and of course the scenery for Our Grease Production.
One frog - two eyes- four legs - kerplunk - in the puddle..... A game we would play in a circle
Sadie Hawkins day - one of my favorite days....
I have to say I remember having one tennis court at camp - Did anyone ever play or learn how to play tennis ?
Being scared when the boys from the other camp decided to raid us when I was a CIT. Lucky we had a lot of girls in the bunk and they eventually left us alone.
Who could forget the lake ..... I remember making sure to move in the lake as who wanted their legs or toes to be touched by the fish let alone a turtle. Swim tests for advanced swimmers inorder to take out a canoe.
I remember trying to see how often I could get out of instruction swim by using the old " I have my period excuse" Until it no longer worked anymore.
End of the summer when the indians would come on Lake Stahahe and light the sign of HES made up of sanitary napkins was a sad event . As you knew the summer was really over . I always went home with no voice and my eyes so red from crying.
What was the words to the song - We are the CIT'S oh pity us ......
I always went home with strep Throat as I was always run down by the end of the summer. Guess I had a great time year after year.
My time at Camp HES was amazing . If you can think of anything else that made the place so great . Let me know. To all those folks that made my time at HES Memorable....... Ilene, Debbie R, Lisa Berger, Jami , Susan , Jo, Jill , Pearl , debbie W, Scott D, Scott and Nancy Slavens, Debbie Nagel , Glen and Wendy Evans , Ricki, Howie , Jonathon , Bruce and your dog , Barry Klein and Bruce Gramma ( gone but not forgotten) Adam F, David Moskowitz , Scott N, Jay M, Saul and Neal , Floyd , Slick , Gary M , Larry M, Mitch, Bobby S, Philip K, Rafi , Andy Baumman , Fritz , Steve Marks, Gwen , Joy , Monique, Cara , Robin , Donna F, Donna, Kelly , Vivian , Ruth , Marcie , Ronnie, Louie, Monroe , Marc Gramma , Andy B, Steve T, Scott R, Scott G, Rory, Merill, Adam S, Steven S, Robert Chenrick and so many others that I may have forgotten.

Hi all,
I went to HES from '68 to '75. It's great seeing all the familiar names. The one name I didn't see was Ellen Lent. Still have a lifetime crush on her. She was the lifeguard and assistant nurse during those years. Gary Marcus was a friend of mine for all my time there and remember him and Philip Klien and Larry well.
It was sad when Dave Taab died. My mom used to babysit Bonnie and was close with her mom.
My brother is a paramedic and was at the site when Joey Vitucci died. So sad some didn't make it.
Give a shout out if you would like to say hi.

- Another voice from the ’70’s -- Danny Glasser, 22:37:09 03/25/07 Sun (c-24-16-68-201.hsd1.wa.comcast.net/24.16.68.201)
I attended Camp H.E.S. from 1973 (bunk 3) through 1978 (C.I.T.).
Wow, the flood of memories that comes back when I read these postings and the names of people that I haven’t seen in nearly 30(!) years. Many good memories, a few bad, all shrouded in the mists of the past, when it seemed that everybody who mattered was younger than 25.
By the time I left Camp H.E.S. in '78, we’d moved to Sheepshead Bay, so I wasn’t around the H.E.S. building on E. 95th St, nor did I go to high school with anybody from camp (except Sharyn Marks). Plus for the past twenty years I’ve been out on the West Coast, so I’ve lost touch with everybody from that part of my life, including Scott Dichter, who was one of my best friends in junior high school.
I’ve often wondered what I would find if I visited the old camp on Lake Stahahe. Are the old cabins with our autographs still there? (I remember one counselor writing his name all over the bunk on 7/7/77.) Or has the place been redeveloped? The satellite photos on the web don’t show much detail. I did read somewhere that the Red Apple Rest is closed.
I can still sing the whole Rabbi Dov song (“I am the Rabbi Dov, I’m a hippie with a beard…”) from memory. I probably remember those lyrics better than blessing on which it’s based.
A few shout-outs to folks who have posted here:
Gary Cioffi – I was a CIT with you in 1978. As I recall you were the elder statesman of the group. I’ve been listening to Meat Loaf’s “Bat Out of Hell” lately and it takes me back; that and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” were the soundtracks of that summer. I remember the trip to Virginia Beach.
Nancy and Scott Slavens – I’ve enjoyed reading your postings. Scott was one of my counselors.
Jay Mandelblatt – To us younger guys, you were pretty much the coolest guy we knew. I remember being so impressed when you left camp to see the MLB All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium in ’77.
Bruce Freedberg – What’s your brother Richie up to? He and I were pretty tight one summer.
There are quite a few other folks I’d be curious to hear about. One name that sticks in my mind is Joe Liss, who was a bunkmate for most of those years.
I just got email about the H.E.S. reunion on June 10th. Regrettably I’m a bit too far away to pop into Brooklyn for that one.

- Who would have thought.... -- Geri Katz, 12:41:15 03/18/07 Sun (ool-44c00100.dyn.optonline.net/68.192.1.0)
That as a freckle-faced, curly haired shy girl of 10, I'd be sitting at my computer eagerly reading all the new posts of my camp HES memories over 25 years later.
I smile as I read all of the new and old posts and whether I knew you personally or not, floods of great memories rush back to me each time I log in here.
I remember a few years back renting the movie that was made at the 'newer' HES campgrounds "A Wilder Summer" just so that I could remember what the camp looked like. (Unfortunately any pictures I had from camp were destroyed)
I try to explain to my husband and son about my camp HES experiences and they look at me like I am crazy and my son vehemently refuses to go away to a sleepaway camp at all.
I think some of my most fun memories were sneaking out of girls bunk thru the fire escape door when we were punished and supposed to be staying in the bunk and then trying to sneak back in without getting caught...Ruben making us to calesthenics and holding rocks in our hand out on blacktop at like 3am for what seemed like forever. (yes, its still a FUN memory!) colorwar break outs,..the one that barely still comes to mind was when Marty's dog Miles (I think!!!) was blamed for getting loose and biting someone at a neighboring camp. (again,..I think!) and all us young girls of 10-11 or so sobbing our eyes out. I think they even had the "police" show up. I also remember catching fish at the lake for Ema and then brining them to her. And for my grandma, coming to visit me at camp and then asking how to flush the toilet. Priceless was the look on her face when I told her they didnt flush....

Well,
I have had two long weeks to digest the untimely passing of Rafi. I love seeing "Rafi Memories" in print, it brings back such happy times. We all have memories of Rafi. (the biggest camper at HES).
I was fortunate enough to stay in contact with him over the years and I can assure you that he never changed one bit.
Rafi lived life to the fullest, until his last day.
About a month ago I spoke to him and he was up on a Cherry Picker. Now mind you, it wasn't his job, he was a land developer in Westchester, he had contractors to do the dirty work. Knowing Rafi, he had to fool around with the crew and get his hands dirty. On Wednesday, February 21, I called him to wish him a Happy 55 Birthday. He was up in Vermont Skiing with his kids (11 + 13)Again, he lived life to the fullest. I am so happy he had a great week with his kids, a memory they will always cherish.
In February, Rafi's daughter became a Bat Mitzvah, he was so busy planning every last detail. He loved his children and never stopped talking about them.
As for my memories of Rafi, they go on and on and I cherish each and every one. We spent many years together, each day an event in itself. From the motorcycle (Kawasaki 750) to skiing every weekend, life with Rafi was quite the adventure. Only recently, Rafi and I spoke about life after death. He always felt his father was looking after him as a Guardian Angel. I am sure Rafi has earned his wings. Rest in Peace Big Guy

For all of you that were part of camp HES at Harriman State Park on Lake Stahahe. I found out that Rafi Billig passed away this past weekend. For those of you that dont remember him very well, he was Ema's (camp cook) son.
Rafi was an important part of my family during the late 1970's and early 1980's, as he and my sister dated during that period. He virtually lived in my house for a year.
During that time, he and I became very close.
I will always remember:
Going with him, Marla, Marcel, and Don to New Paltz, drinking ourselves blind then wedging his Beetle under a tree on the camp road (Dont Drink and Drive!)
When Rafi broke color war by bringing his very expensive sound system to camp in 1972, and wiring the WHOLE camp with sound. He produced sound effects on his reel to reel that sounded like a space invasion
So much more...
Rest in peace

Went to sleepaway in 1975 and had the greatest summer!!!Shared a room with Debbie Weiss, Ruthy Eichner, Marti Rubenstein. Was friends with Eileen Block and Pearl Grabowsky. Remember Phillip Klein, Glen Nissell,Gary Marcus and was in LOVE with Don Lipke (I think) a boys counselor. I was too young, but what a great summer. Scott Dibiase had a cousin that grabbed my breast once and I hit him so hard in the face I knocked him down. Still laugh over it!!!Hopefully his face healed. Love to hear from anyone that remembers me.

I am researching the history of the children's camps at Harriman State Park in order to write a book about them. This is where the HES camp was. Does anyone have material on the early, middle and late history? It would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all,
Does my name sound familiar? I went to HES from 1974 -1977. Wow, do I miss HES. I miss Dave Tabb and his bunny slippers, dancing on black top, the canteen, bug juice, intense volleyball games, Friday hikes, dedications at the table, basketball games against other camps, color war, raids, even the latrines, raiding the kitchen. Where are all my fellow grease cast mates?
I want to share the old days with my friends.

David Duke is a malignant narcissist and a Domestic Terrorist. -- COLONEL ANGUS, 03:33:16 06/10/06 Sat (c-71-192-178-26.hsd1.ma.comcast.net/71.192.178.26)
David Duke is a malignant narcissist and a Domestic Terrorist.
He invents and then projects a false, fictitious, self for the world to fear, or to admire. He maintains a tenuous grasp on reality to start with and the trappings of power further exacerbate this. Real life authority and David Duke’s predilection to surround him with obsequious sycophants support David Duke’s grandiose self-delusions and fantasies of omnipotence and omniscience.
David Duke's personality is so precariously balanced that he cannot tolerate even a hint of criticism and disagreement. Most narcissists are paranoid and suffer from ideas of reference (the delusion that they are being mocked or discussed when they are not). Thus, narcissists often regard themselves as "victims of persecution".
Duke fosters and encourages a personality cult with all the hallmarks of an institutional religion: priesthood, rites, rituals, temples, worship, catechism, and mythology. The leader is this religion's ascetic saint. He monastically denies himself earthly pleasures (or so he claims) in order to be able to dedicate himself fully to his calling.
Duke is a monstrously inverted Jesus, sacrificing his life and denying himself so that his people - or humanity at large - should benefit. By surpassing and suppressing his humanity, Duke became a distorted version of Nietzsche's "superman". But being a-human or super-human also means being a-sexual and a-moral.
In this restricted sense, narcissistic leaders are post-modernist and moral relativists. They project to the masses an androgynous figure and enhance it by engendering the adoration of nudity and all things "natural" - or by strongly repressing these feelings. But what they refer to, as "nature" is not natural at all.
Duke invariably proffers an aesthetic of decadence and evil carefully orchestrated and artificial - though it is not perceived this way by him or by his followers. Narcissistic leadership is about reproduced copies, not about originals. It is about the manipulation of symbols - not about veritable atavism or true conservatism.
In short: narcissistic leadership is about theatre, not about life. To enjoy the spectacle (and be subsumed by it), the leader demands the suspension of judgment, depersonalization, and de-realization. Catharsis is tantamount, in this narcissistic dramaturgy, to self-annulment.
Narcissism is nihilistic not only operationally, or ideologically. Its very language and narratives are nihilistic. Narcissism is conspicuous nihilism - and the cult's leader serves as a role model, annihilating the Man, only to re-appear as a pre-ordained and irresistible force of nature.
Narcissistic leadership often poses as a rebellion against the "old ways" - against the hegemonic culture, the upper classes, the established religions, the superpowers, the corrupt order. Narcissistic movements are puerile, a reaction to narcissistic injuries inflicted upon David Duke like (and rather psychopathic) toddler nation-state, or group, or upon the leader.
Minorities or "others" - often arbitrarily selected - constitute a perfect, easily identifiable, embodiment of all that is "wrong". They are accused of being old, they are eerily disembodied, they are cosmopolitan, they are part of the establishment, they are "decadent", they are hated on religious and socio-economic grounds, or because of their race, sexual orientation, origin ... They are different, they are narcissistic (feel and act as morally superior), they are everywhere, they are defenseless, they are credulous, they are adaptable (and thus can be co-opted to collaborate in their own destruction). They are the perfect hate figure. Narcissists thrive on hatred and pathological envy.
This is precisely the source of the fascination with Hitler, diagnosed by Erich Fromm - together with Stalin - as a malignant narcissist. He was an inverted human. His unconscious was his conscious. He acted out our most repressed drives, fantasies, and wishes. He provides us with a glimpse of the horrors that lie beneath the veneer, the barbarians at our personal gates, and what it was like before we invented civilization. Hitler forced us all through a time warp and many did not emerge. He was not the devil. He was one of us. He was what Arendt aptly called the banality of evil. Just an ordinary, mentally disturbed, failure, a member of a mentally disturbed and failing nation, who lived through disturbed and failing times. He was the perfect mirror, a channel, a voice, and the very depth of our souls.
Duke prefers the sparkle and glamour of well-orchestrated illusions to the tedium and method of real accomplishments. His reign is all smoke and mirrors, devoid of substances, consisting of mere appearances and mass delusions. In the aftermath of his regime - Duke having died, been deposed, or voted out of office - it all unravels. The tireless and constant prestidigitation ceases and the entire edifice crumbles. What looked like an economic miracle turns out to have been a fraud-laced bubble. Loosely held empires disintegrate. Laboriously assembled business conglomerates go to pieces. "Earth shattering" and "revolutionary" scientific discoveries and theories are discredited. Social experiments end in mayhem.
It is important to understand that the use of violence must be ego-syntonic. It must accord with the self-image of David Duke. It must abet and sustain his grandiose fantasies and feed his sense of entitlement. It must conform David Duke like narrative. Thus, David Duke who regards himself as the benefactor of the poor, a member of the common folk, the representative of the disenfranchised, the champion of the dispossessed against the corrupt elite - is highly unlikely to use violence at first. The pacific mask crumbles when David Duke has become convinced that the very people he purported to speak for, his constituency, his grassroots fans, and the prime sources of his narcissistic supply - have turned against him. At first, in a desperate effort to maintain the fiction underlying his chaotic personality, David Duke strives to explain away the sudden reversal of sentiment. "The people are being duped by (the media, big industry, the military, the elite, etc.)", "they don't really know what they are doing", "following a rude awakening, they will revert to form", etc. When these flimsy attempts to patch a tattered personal mythology fail, David Duke becomes injured. Narcissistic injury inevitably leads to narcissistic rage and to a terrifying display of unbridled aggression. The pent-up frustration and hurt translate into devaluation. That which was previously idealized - is now discarded with contempt and hatred. This primitive defense mechanism is called "splitting". To David Duke, things and people are either entirely bad (evil) or entirely good. He projects onto others his own shortcomings and negative emotions, thus becoming a totally good object. Duke is likely to justify the butchering of his own people by claiming that they intended to kill him, undo the revolution, devastate the economy, or the country, etc. The "small people", the "rank and file", and the "loyal soldiers" of David Duke - his flock, his nation, and his employees - they pay the price. The disillusionment and disenchantment are agonizing. The process of reconstruction, of rising from the ashes, of overcoming the trauma of having been deceived, exploited and manipulated - is drawn-out. It is difficult to trust again, to have faith, to love, to be led, to collaborate. Feelings of shame and guilt engulf the erstwhile followers of David Duke. This is his sole legacy: a massive post-traumatic stress disorder.

- looking 4 my old counslers mike feldman and dave mish -- adam m, 04:56:00 02/10/06 Fri (NoHost/12.153.99.82)
i had these 2 counslers who were super cool. i remember them beating up the counslers from the paderget camp because they were throwing us off the swings and giving them to their campers. i also remember mike and dave taking us back to one of their houses and feeding us junk food! those were the days! i remember walking down the beach in a single file line and everytime we seen pretty girls mike and dave would have us yell come lets smoke some doobs lol.. those were the best counslers that camp has ever had! if anyone knows them please write back with your stories

- Happy Times -- Barbara Kinney, 12:48:10 11/03/05 Thu (host2.nsta.org/199.0.2.2)
wow. such happy times at Camp HES. I went for like 10 years, from Bunk 1 up to aide. Never made it to CIT though! I think my name is in toothpaste in every cabin! I still miss the bug juice and friday night chicken soup. I hated being the one to run up and get the food though! Remember lanyans? David Tabb was the best. I babysat for Hutch' kid, the boy..what was his name? I have red hair and went to camp with Valerie, Beth, Debbie and Michelle. Any else remember them?

Anyone remember me from camp? My name is David Grossman aka "Big Monroe". My younger brother, Marc was "Little Monroe".
We went to Camp HES from 1972-1980, as both campers and staff.
I'd love to here from any of you :)

I attended HES as a camper in the 1980's at the new site. I remember the Fishkin building, the big white rock everyone sat on, that steep hill that led to the old pool, going on raids, ice cold showers, losing your voice during color war, singing that rewritten song the last night of color war, Ema’s Cup, etc.
I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.

- Wow I feel so old -- Geri Katz, 15:22:05 09/25/03 Thu (ool-43500606.dyn.optonline.net/67.80.6.6)
I went to camp HES sleepway from 1970's to 80's. I remember the old site with latrines and a lake to the newer campground in Suffern. Dave Tabb was the BEST camp director. I remember Barb and Hutch and Skates. I was bunkmates with Tracy Grama, Mindy McMullen, Cheryl Levine, Patti Gordon. I had a big afro and glasses and braces and am glad to say I outgrew all of those.
I remember color wars and all the plaques we did, writing our names on the walls in toothpaste for all posterity, and made some great memories.
Anyone can email me if you want. I live in New Jersey and have a 3 1/2 year old son now and a hubby. Are we ever going to have any type of reunion????????

- HS Reunion 1982 - 1986 -- Canarsie66, 17:04:41 01/10/04 Sat (ool-44c20d7c.dyn.optonline.net/68.194.13.124)
Anyone interested in attending a double Canarsie HS/South Shore HS reunion?
The idea is to make it a jumbo reunion for the ultra good-looking and cool classes of 1982 - 1986, as we all have extremely busy lives. (Inclusion of 1981 & up to 1988 is also an option).
Plus, our neighborhood didn't promote the best school spirit, so this way we can guarantee at least 200 - 300 people attending.
Tables can be set up according to HS & graduating year.
Those who didn't graduate CHS or SSHS for whatever reason(but who would have in those years) are also invited.
If interested, let me know via email at Canarsie66@aol.com.
If the response rate is decent, I'll seriously start planning this for a Saturday night, either in January, 2005, or July, 2005.
This way, some of you have some time to lose 20 pounds,
work out, get lipo and hair transplants:-)
This reunion concept depends on the feedback I get.
We'll have it somewhere nice, either in NYC (either a hotel ballroom like the Hilton, Marriott or Sheraton, or a cool lounge-type place like Metronome).
Email me with your thoughts & ideas.
Put "Canarsie Reunion" in the subject line so I don't delete your email.
