blisters and welts around underwear line -- kelly mccarthy, 07:06:27 09/06/09 Sun
I have been latex allergic for 10+ years however until now never had issues with clothes. Lately I'm developing welts under my bra line and inside my thighs. Any ideas on how to prevent this? Is the amount of latex in underwear enough to cause such a reaction?

- Anyone allergic ever had a reaction to rubberwood? -- Julia, 09:38:43 01/02/08 Wed
My daughter (almost 3 yrs old) has spina bifida and we use latex precautions. Luckily she is not allergic yet. All the lists I have seen about what latex items to stay away from have never said anything about rubberwood.
When I opened up the dollhouse Santa was giving her it said it was made entirely from rubberwood. This concerns me because that is wood from the tree that produces latex, however, from what I can tell on the web it is used after the tree stops producing latex. She has not had any reaction to the wood but I don't want to create an allergy either. Any info or experience with rubberwood?
Thank you from a worried Santa!

- Latex mattress -- Diane, 10:33:58 02/25/08 Mon
Is there any evidence that you can develop a latex allergy from sleeping on a latex mattress? I have been sleeping on one now for about a year and for the last 9 months have the feeling of swelling in my throat and difficulty swallowing. No tests so far have revealed the cause. Has anyone ever known this type of reaction to latex? Thanks for any response.

Nurses and latex -- Katie, 12:19:35 06/08/09 Mon
Hello. I am a nurse who was recently diagnosed with a latex allergy with anaphylaxis reactions. My work is trying to work with me but they placed me in another latex environment which gave me another reaction (I've had 4 hospitalizations so far). Does anyone have any ideas on how to get through this? Is anyone a nurse? What did they do? Does anyone have any names of any lawyers I can get in contact with? THANK YOU!!

I'm really not sure what to do since everything has a cord nowadays. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this has been extremely difficult for me to manage and I don't want to become the girl in the plastic bubble (smile - but not really).

- Latex Allergy and Poinsettia Plants -- Pat Nowick, 18:01:45 11/09/09 Mon
Be aware. Last year there was a study done that indicated
one would have to consume a large amount of the Poinsettia to produce a Latex reaction.
Please note. Balloons have been banned in many hospitals because they produce an AIR BORNE allergen. Latex balloons were not banned because children were eating them.
The Pointsetia plant also produces an airborne allergen and is therefore as much of a hazzard. The floral industry
does not want to lose the sale of millions of plants.
Medical providers and hospitals need to be warned about the
true hazzard of Pointsettia plants in their buildings.
We need more warnings out there. Pat

- Rubber Flooring - from recycled tires -- Sharon, 21:57:30 03/22/09 Sun
I had a dental consult on Friday and the waiting room was a black space age type play area for children that this dentist rents one day a week. Anyhow did my typical prep by calling ahead they are latex free, etc... When I showed up I made it to the counter to check in just as the room started to crazy, I made it to the hallway saying latex allergy.... I was having full anaphatic reaction, swelling, feeling faint and really not knowing what was happening. The assistant came out in the hallway to say, oh they use recycled tires as flooring and wall cover to protect the kids. Has anybody else experienced this or know of this type of flooring actually being used in medical facilities. I thought this was only for exterior use in playgrounds. Any links would be helpful.

- Trying to find a doctor -- Cindy Hespe, 19:31:08 09/19/09 Sat
Has anyone had experience with Karin Pacheco, MD, and other docs National Jewish in Denver? I have rapidly worsening latex allergies and have not been able to find a doc in my community that knows latex well. I am trying to find docs to help me keep from getting any worse and to help me get social security if I can no longer work. I checked allergy association websites but the one "latex specialist" listed in my area really isn't that good (I work in health care). I am willing to travel anywhere between Denver and the west coast. I'm also wondering about seeing a community allergist vs. a health care team of docs/others (pulmonologist, immunologist, allergist, dietician). Would appreciate any experiences you can share. Thanks so much.

Ballons & Latex in the workplace -- Bj Rausch (Happy Medium), 01:13:29 05/08/08 Thu
I've worked for a major rental car company for the past 7 years and have had issues with balloons they've used to decorate the cubicles in the office setting; though the course of time I've more or less won and stopped them from using latex balloons and if they decorated they've used Mylar balloons to accomodate my needs. Now I've changed jobs again another one of the Major Car Renters here in the US and am starting all over with the office where I am at being decorated with Latex Balloons and am having issues with them now not accomodating my needs when I made this issue very clear with them during the pre-hire process and fear that I am either going to have a major legal battle on my hands or worse lose my only source of income.I don't know where to turn so that I don't ruin my chances of staying employed with all the crazy questions they're now requiring me to ask my Dr., I am so sensitized that I can't breath when exposed to balloons, even the office chairs at this company have rubber on them....and I was told flat out buy my own chair this is just crazy. I'm hoping to find a local or state agency that can assist me to show them the light that this is a very serious issue without the loss of my new position at this company. I mean I feel horrible that I have this health issue and have no control over it and don't think that I am asking too much when I've made the point of the allergy very clear to the people who were hiring me several weeks ago.

- Hearing Aids -- Wanda, 14:50:25 06/29/09 Mon
Hi,
I was diagnosed with severe latex allergy in the late 1980's. I am hard of hearing and wear hearing aids. I bought Phonak Valeo hearing aids in 2006 and began having allergic reactions after wearing them for about two years. I was told they were latex free by the audiologist who had contacted the company. When I began having reactions- my ear canals swell and close, the company said the aids were latex free, but had a small amount inside the aid that doesn't touch the ear so I should not have problems. I do and this was verified by my doctor. Does anyone know of a true latex free hearing aid? I do not want to spend over $3,000 for a set I have to discard because of manufacturer's incomplete understanding of latex allergies. Thank you.

- Where do I find bras with no lycra? -- Megan, 21:45:34 04/09/09 Thu
I'm trying to find bras for my 80 year old mother. She has positively worn out her 100% cotton ones we found years ago. She is unable to get into let alone out of the 100% cotton sportsbra styles I can find. And despite the appalling condition of the bras she has been wearing, she had the nerve to turn up her nose when I told her I found a website that had drawstring bras. The more I read, I feel I need to clarify the lycra allergy. She does not seem to react to natural rubber and I'm not sure about laytex. Isn't that a product of natural rubber?

I have latex allergy (since 1998)and recently in the past year or so have had numerous issues with sanitary napkins. I know this is directly related in my mind since tampons do not cause the same problems. (I react bad to the plastic store bags on contact) Of course the doctors have performed addition tests to rule out everything else, umm they all came back negative. So what i am looking for is references or information that this is not an isolated incident. There is no information in the medical libraries and only references I seem to find only reference they may contain but nothing more. I am trying to convince my doctors.

latex allergy -- Julie (Itchy), 19:48:14 08/12/08 Tue
I seemed to have developed an allergy to the latex gloves we are wearing on a pipeline job for protection from the epoxy. I've broken out with a horrid rash on my hands & arms, and have quit using the gloves, have been taking Benedryl as recommended by the Dr. As I am working 7-12 hour days, I don't have time to get into the Dr. It still seems to be spreading up my arms...........how long until I can expect the rash to go away, and quit spreading? I've gone 3 days now since it started and quit wearing the latex.

I am diagnosed latex allergic but am very good at employing precautions re food etc.Hospital trip in a rush yesterday.Struggling to isolate what caused the reaction. I ate baked potato (well cooked), a homemade coleslaw(white cabbage, cucumber, onion and shop bought mayonnaise).Nothing on the mayonnaise label caused alarm.
The reaction followed swiftly after the meal so I'm focusing there and not on anything eaten earlier in the day. Has anybody else had a reaction to the other ingredients?
Any help appreciated. Thank you.

Does anyone know if there are totally latex free vacuums? I am in the market for a canister type, HEPA vacuum and would appreciate any feedback. Also, which vacuum cleaner has been successful for you. Successful as in, no allergic reactions.
The Miele vacuums have latex & some brands have latex in the wheels & the vacuum bags, but I don't know about the other brands.

Non-labeled latex merchandise -- Kandace Boysen (frustrated), 15:49:14 11/13/08 Thu
My 16 yr. old son is known to have Latex allergies. Has had 3 reactions since 10/05. He had wisdom teeth extractions today. I purchased a reusable ice bag to use for swelling. There was no LATEX labeling on the package. He started to have a reaction. I gave him the usual regimen of meds. He airway has never been compromised so far. My question is: why aren't manufacturers of products with latex required to indicate so with obvious wording, etc? Instead, products without latex are labeled "latex free". Shouldn't problem products have proper warning signs? The store pharmacist and manager told me that this is how manufacturers warn the consumer. I don't think this is user friendly, not to mention a safe practice.
