I have had a difficult time finding underwear that I can wear without haveing a latex alergy reaction from the elastic. Can someone recomend a manufacturer of men's underware that does not result in a latex reaction? I am fortunate in that I do not have a reaction unless my pores are open when perspiring.

- Latex Allergy -- Judy, 20:03:49 04/12/12 Thu
I have a severe latex allergy. I have had several moderate reactions: hives, tightness in chest, itchy eyes. I also have had one severe reaction when exposed to balloon arches in a small room. This resulted in Anaphylaxis shock. My question is, Now that my allergy is type 1, severe, how much latex do I need to be exposed to before I have a reaction? For example, could the use of several latex rubber bands being taken on and off of documents within my reach cause a reaction? I left a meeting when this happened. I began getting flushed face and itchy eyes. Also needed to use my inhaler and took benedryl. Don't know if it was from rubber bands or simply other allergens.

- Rubber Flooring - from recycled tires -- Sharon, 21:57:30 03/22/09 Sun
I had a dental consult on Friday and the waiting room was a black space age type play area for children that this dentist rents one day a week. Anyhow did my typical prep by calling ahead they are latex free, etc... When I showed up I made it to the counter to check in just as the room started to crazy, I made it to the hallway saying latex allergy.... I was having full anaphatic reaction, swelling, feeling faint and really not knowing what was happening. The assistant came out in the hallway to say, oh they use recycled tires as flooring and wall cover to protect the kids. Has anybody else experienced this or know of this type of flooring actually being used in medical facilities. I thought this was only for exterior use in playgrounds. Any links would be helpful.

I am a singer and I am allergic to natural rubber latex. I am allergic to the microphone cables. Are there any companies that make non-latex cables? Or a way to cover the cables (without it looking horribly tacky)? I am also, sadly, allergic to tape (the adhesive glue) so tape isn't a viable option. Any ideas?

Pointsettas -- Colleen, 08:58:24 11/30/08 Sun
I found out that I had Type I allergy last Thanksgiving. I had my first big reaction on Valentine's Day from balloons. I now get very anxious when I even see balloons so I can't tell if I am having a reaction or just freaking out. I have heard that pointsettas have latex in them. Does anyone know what is a safe distance? Churches usually have hundreds of them during the holidays.

- Operating Room Protocol -- Cathryn Ornelas RN, 17:04:45 05/10/10 Mon
I work in the operating room, I have developed a Latex allergy myself, so I have become the resident expert on Latex. Basically we follow AORN recommended practice for preparing the OR for a patient with Latex allergy. Basically our protocol is to terminally clean the OR the night before, take out any supplies containg latex, obtain alternate supplies and double check everything to make sure there is no latex, and make it the first case of the day. Some of our doctors think this is overkill. What do you recommend? Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

- Anyone allergic ever had a reaction to rubberwood? -- Julia, 09:38:43 01/02/08 Wed
My daughter (almost 3 yrs old) has spina bifida and we use latex precautions. Luckily she is not allergic yet. All the lists I have seen about what latex items to stay away from have never said anything about rubberwood.
When I opened up the dollhouse Santa was giving her it said it was made entirely from rubberwood. This concerns me because that is wood from the tree that produces latex, however, from what I can tell on the web it is used after the tree stops producing latex. She has not had any reaction to the wood but I don't want to create an allergy either. Any info or experience with rubberwood?
Thank you from a worried Santa!

- detecting latex elastic in clothing -- Clare, 16:28:31 07/09/10 Fri
I have a 10 year old special needs daughter who was just diagnosed with a latex allergy. Her blood test came back positive. She is mostly reacting to the rubber shoe soles of her tennis shoe and her bathing suit straps. This past weekend, she had swollen lips from a reaction. The reactions seem to be getting worse. I can't tell which of her shirts/pants have latex in it. As long as the elastic is covered in cotton she seems to do okay. If it gets wet, then the latex allergen seems to seep throught to her skin. Some of her shirts have a "clear" exposed thin sheet of something stretchy on the seem line of the side/arms. Is this latex, or is the "clear" material something else that may not cause a reaction. I'm at a loss as to where to get safe clothes. Any help would be great! Oh, and is it true that CROCS are latex-free?

- Latex allergy for florists -- cathy, 11:45:45 04/29/10 Thu
This may be a repeat but in reading the notes about poinsietta reactions. Did you consider that most florist shops and floral distributers use latex gloves to protect their hands from the stems etc. perhaps that is where the allergy is coming from also. When i planned my daughters wedding - i had to be very specific for them not to use latex gloves in any of the prep. also beware of the plumbers as they use them also.
another area they use them is in car repair......this allergy to latex can be very trying -you have to alert to all your surroundings.

- latex at school -- Jane, 15:00:24 04/19/10 Mon
Our five year old son has recently been diagnosed with a latex allergy. I have come up with the following list for the school (to remove or get a latex-free alternative): balls, gym mats, art supples (paint/glue), mouse pads, erasers, rubberbands, no balloons, no latex gloves/bandaids, no silk plants, no pointsettas (Is it really airborne? I thought it was just touching the sap), headphones, packing peanuts, silver duct tape. Anything else?

- Latex Allergy and Poinsettia Plants -- Pat Nowick, 18:01:45 11/09/09 Mon
Be aware. Last year there was a study done that indicated
one would have to consume a large amount of the Poinsettia to produce a Latex reaction.
Please note. Balloons have been banned in many hospitals because they produce an AIR BORNE allergen. Latex balloons were not banned because children were eating them.
The Pointsetia plant also produces an airborne allergen and is therefore as much of a hazzard. The floral industry
does not want to lose the sale of millions of plants.
Medical providers and hospitals need to be warned about the
true hazzard of Pointsettia plants in their buildings.
We need more warnings out there. Pat

- 504 plan -- Alice, 14:15:48 10/06/10 Wed
My NRLA daughter has just started high school this year and was homeschooled previously. Though I began the process in May, the administration does not want any "outsiders" giving school staff any in-service information on latex allergies and they also refused a walk through before she started school. Needless to say my daughter has been coming home with hives, headaches, etc., as no accomodations have been made regarding banning erasers, rubber bands, balls made of latex etc. Balloons and latex gloves were banned. The pricipal has also nixed doing a 504 plan for her. I need to take this to the next level but in the meantime, do I have a right to request a 504 plan and what is the advantage of having one? An individual health care plan was written by the school nurse but it needs revisions. We live in Massachusetts. Thanks for your help.
