Based on what has been posted as public record, it does seem to me that we as fanciers have come to a fork in the road. I find it only natural that the HBSA wants to preserve the "historic" boerboel, as that is their name. Taking that a little further, it seems to me that the message put forth is that the type of dog we are seeing favored today isn't it. I am looking forward to the HBSA's final determination of just what that historic type is.
From traffic on some of the other boards, I see a division forming between those who believe type should be above any other qualities and those who care less about looks and elevate functional ability as prime concerns. Whatever side of the road you might choose, surely it can be agreed on that there is a lot of room for improvement in multiple areas.
When I first became interested in the breed and saw my first one 8 years ago, the reputation of the breed and his capabilities was markedly different than what is currently being expressed today. Back then there was the promotion of working and protection in his background as well as the stories of fighting off leopards and catching hares for the stewpot while guarding the livestock and children. Today it seems that this message has been diluted by the mainstream breeder and that they are primarily represented as companions/family dogs. This is all well and good as I don't have leopards in Kansas, but I do think that if indeed the breed was used by the African pioneers for similar tasks like those mentioned as well as the other conditions that a dog would surely face when living in that environment, then it is very important to ensure that the breed does indeed have those same abilities today. Anything less would be just that....less. I am quite sure that a dog such as that historic dog would still be a valuable friend and companion, and just as useful today as he must have surely been back then.
I look forward to future clarification from the HBSA as it unfolds. I think this is an exciting time for the breed and am very glad to be witnessing it.
