Subject: Dorsolateral Subluxation another Hip assessment tech.

http://www.sheepdog.com/Todhunter/bg.html

This is the most up to date site that I have been able to find on Canine Hip Dysplasia. It is written by Dr. Todhunter a vet surgeon from Cornell University. It is somewhat technical and I believe at some point intended to instruct veterinarians in the performance of a new hip assessment technique (dorsolateral subluxation, see inside).

It doesn't appear that Cornell is going to try and licence this technique and that it is available to any vet to develop and use. Heard today that the American Border Collie Assn. will be funding Dr. T. in order to evaluate this technique.

One of the challenges of managing a breed across oceans is to be able to have comparable scientific methods with which to assess orthopedic health. From what I know SA vets use two views: an extended and a frog position. I don't know if these views are predictive as penn-hip or DLS seem to be. As the site states a "study showed that of all dogs developing hip osteoarthritis over their life span, only 53% had radiographic evidence of a CHD at 2 years of age." I believe that this was in reference to OFA assessment.

There is also a theory expressed regarding differential hormonal loading in the lactating dysplastic/non-dysplastic bitch and how this might affect their pups in their orthopedic development.

We have a website (non-commercial) www.webcanine that covers canine training, health etc. Pls visit.
