In the dog world appearance and commerce share a close relationship. As far as relationship of size and health, when size is adjusted for appearance/commerce health suffers and that adjustment can be smaller or larger. If the size is adjusted by survival of that species health IMO is not seriously affected. When I spoke of angulation I did not mean to an artificial scale but to a scale, in the case of a dog, to enable him in the most efficient manner to fulfill its function assuming that function is not to walk around a ring. As you said "For the most part the BB is not asked to fulfill its original function" that may be true but to quote Colonel David Hancock author of "The Mastiffs the big game hunters "Breeders of the mastiff breeds MUST produce dogs that are capable of carring out their historic role, even if they are not required to do so. The breed history gave us the breed; the breed history must be our guide in perpetuating the breed. What alternative path can we follow?" Your point is well take as to the necessity to maintain genetic diversity. Because of the inability of dogs from other registries to "meet each other" politics/power has become more important than the improvement of the breed. As always thank you for your post, I learned something. Norman
