Subject: Debate

To debate - A formal contest of argumentation in which opposing teams, (people), defend and attack a given proposition.

Debates are a good thing. I enjoy a good debate. They stimulate thought and provide, possibly, not before thought of viewpoints to the opposing side. No where in the definition of debate is it said you should attack the character of another. If that is what happens, call it what you will, but you cannot call it debating.

In my youthful days I had many a, shall I say, 'conflict'. Invariably after the conflict, either out loud or to myself, I said, "I had no choice, he, she, they forced me to respond in the manner I did." Now, in my not so youthful days, I realize I ALWAYS had other choices. Win, lose or draw, I ALWAYS other choices. The choice I almost always chose back then was the one that would continue the conflict. It was a conscious choice. We all have the choice to choose potentially rewarding debate or virtually never TRULY rewarding conflict. It is truly all about choice. To not sound like a peacenik, I'll end by saying, there are times the path of conflict may be necessary to continue a way of life, but much of the conflict in our lives are self imposed and much too often was not the only choice, but simply the choice we made.
