PRESERVATION OF THE FUNCTIONAL QUALITIES OF THE HISTORICALLY CORRECT BOERBOEL

The Historical Boerboel Association of Southern Africa, a non-profitable organization, has accepted a strategy for the preservation and improvement of the many desirable characteristics of the historically correct Boerboel. This became necessary after consultation with many breeders, different societies, scientists, veterinarians and many caring non-breeder owners.

Commercialization of the breed by many puppy-millers have accentuated aesthetics at the expense of functional soundness and versatility. The pillars on which the strategy is based are:-

A common vision on the origin and future of the Boerboel.
Preservation of the desirable attributes of the pioneer dog.
A quantifiable Breed Standard to serve as a blueprint for breeders, judges, societies and the average Boerboel enthusiast. The Breed standard should steer the breed to greater uniformity in type and conformation and should never sacrifice functionality for the sake of looks. For this purpose restrictions on size, color and pigmentation, functionally inefficient animals and temperament were considered after consultation. Richard Beauchamp, noted American All Breed judge, breeder and writer says that dog exhibitors change over 3 to 4 years. To prevent drastic changes with the ever present new comers the breed standard should be precise and clearly understood to preserve the essence of the breed.
Consistent and reliable evaluation (appraisal) of the various components to ensure greater uniformity within the breed:
Type
Sound conformation
Movement and agility
Temperament and mental stability
Working ability
Reliable identification of parents and litters by tattooing, microchip and possible tissue test.
Progeny tests to identify best breeding animals.
Reliable appraisals and proper control over appraisers.
Acceptance of the Boerboel by international bodies of control, etc. KUSA and FCI.
Responsible Boerboel ownership.
Education of prospective Boerboel owners.
All societies, clubs and individuals who subscribe to the above principles, are encouraged to assist in implementing it at all levels. Agreement on acceptable goals will go a long way to remove distrust and concentrate efforts for the betterment of the Boerboel.

SUB-COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE APPRAISAL OF WORKING ABILITY
Funcionality of the Boerboel was grossly neglected at appraisals over the past 16 years. This led to the loss of qualities essential to the survival of the pioneer Boerboel. In order to standardize appraisals for functional effeciency depending on the various needs of Boerboel owners the HBSA Board has nominated a sub-committee to investigate and report back on the relevant issues. The Chairman of this committee is David Harris of Kansas, USA. This committee has authority to consult with any individual or group who wishes to make a contribution. This investigation is important for the future of the historically correct Boerboel.
